Why We’re Fighting This

STOP THE DOUBLE ROTARY is a coalition of Worcester residents opposing the double roundabout redesign project on Chandler Street in the vicinity of May Street School, Worcester State University, and the Worcester Dual Language Magnet School.

The city has budgeted $8.5 million in federal TIP funding for this project. That money could fund pedestrian-friendly alternatives that actually protect children walking to school, residents in nearby retirement facilities, and the thousands of students and employees at Worcester State.

We have gathered over a thousand signatures from local residents, and Worcester State University has publicly opposed the project. We are asking the City Council to redirect these funds toward pedestrian-friendly alternatives that better serve the community.

3 to 4 years of construction disrupting two elementary schools, a university, neighborhoods, and local businesses
A massive aqueduct under Chandler Street must be lowered — that cost is NOT covered by the $8.5M budget and comes out of city tax dollars
Peer-reviewed research shows roundabouts reduce pedestrian safety, especially near schools and in high-traffic areas
The intersection the city claims to be fixing averages less than 2 accidents per year, with only 1 pedestrian incident in 23 years
